At300 Nelson's Mesa: A Linen Upholstery Fabric Built for Versatility

The Mesa linen upholstery fabric arrived around the same time as our Avenida print; the two were born out of the same creative season, the same impulse to keep building on the collection's signature while pushing it somewhere new.

Where Avenida took me back to the palms on Avenida Del Mar, Mesa pulled me further out into the open. Think Moab at first light, the Tetons through a dusty windshield, Big Bend in the kind of quiet that makes you feel something. Wide-open roads and the geometry of desert landscapes. Mesa is a tribute to the way rock and sky negotiate space together.

That feeling of expansiveness is what I wanted to bring indoors, and in doing so I created the Mesa abstract print on certified, authentic Belgian linen, the same 55/45 linen-cotton blend that runs through the rest of the collection. It’s designed to layer, scale, and work hard in a space without ever feeling loud. It's built for upholstery, but it doesn't stop there.

Here's what you need to know.

From Desert Landscapes to Your Interior: The Story Behind Mesa

The wide-open geometry of the American West — the same terrain that shaped Mesa's abstract repeat.

Hot off the debut collection, the question I kept coming back to was: where does the brand go next? The initial lineup had established a signature expression: modern linen upholstery fabric featuring hand-carved, abstract, layerable designs rooted in natural and architectural inspiration. The challenge was to push forward without losing that thread.

The inspiration for Mesa came out of time spent on open roads through the American West. Moab, Jackson, and Big Bend have fascinating landscapes, where erosion carves geometry into rock and distance simplifies everything into form and shadow. There's a discipline to these natural forms that resonates with the way I approach pattern design. Editing down, adding dimension through negative space, and keeping only what needs to be there.

Like every pattern in the collection, Mesa began by hand. Pencil first, then the long process of working it out until the repeat held the right energy. It had to become abstract enough to live in a space without competing with it, but specific enough that you feel the energy of where it came from.

The finished print carries an 18" x 24" repeat, a detail that can be scaled up or down depending on your planned usage.

Why Modern Linen Upholstery Fabric Belongs in Every Design Project

Not all modern upholstery fabric is created equal, and linen is a good example of why that distinction matters. It's one of the oldest fibers in the world for a reason: it gets stronger with use, softens beautifully over time, and breathes in a way synthetic blends simply can't replicate.

The Belgian linen upholstery fabric Mesa is printed on comes from one of the most respected mills in the industry, and the 55/45 linen-cotton blend hits a sweet spot: the linen brings structure, breathability, and its characteristic texture, while the cotton adds softness and a bit of give. At 7.7 oz/yd², it's substantial enough for light upholstery without being stiff.

I’m very particular about where my upholstery linen is sourced, and I work only with mills where a third party has independently verified their fiber sourcing, dyeing process, and finished fabric. At300Nelson is dedicated to adding positive elements to home designs, and our custom linen upholstery fabric contains no metals and no Prop 65 chemicals. Mesa is also printed in the US using a low-VOC process with water-based inks, which reduces waste and captures the detail of the original hand-carved artwork more faithfully than conventional methods.

From Ottomans to Wallcoverings: One Linen Upholstery Fabric, Endless Applications

One of the things I love most about Mesa is how far it travels. Most buyers come in with the mindset that they’re sourcing upholstery fabric for a chair, ottoman or sofa, which turns out beautifully. The weight and feel of the fabric are perfectly matched for furniture upholstery, and the abstract repeat scales beautifully across a larger piece without feeling overwhelming.

But Mesa doesn't stop at seating. Pillows and accent pieces are an easy entry point, especially for layering across an existing room. The Mesa in Basalt pillow is a good place to start if you want to live with the print before committing to yardage. Curtains and drapery are another natural application; the 54" usable width provides real options there.

The application that surprises people most is fabric wallcovering. Mesa's 18" x 24" repeat and the structure of the Belgian linen ground make it genuinely well-suited to wall panels or full wallcovering installations. It's an unexpected move that lands well when placed in the proper space.

The scalable repeat is what makes all of this possible. Sized up, Mesa reads as bold and architectural. Dialed back, it becomes a quiet texture. That flexibility is intentional, and it's what makes Mesa worth speccing across more than one application in a single project.

How Mesa Brings Belgian Linen Fabric to Life

The open road through the American West — one of the drives that shaped the Mesa print.

My partnership with a Belgian linen manufacturer is foundational to the designs and fabrics At300Nelson creates. When our original printer switched to a Belgian yarn produced elsewhere, I sourced independently rather than compromise. I couldn't stand behind a product I couldn't fully verify. The linen we use is grown in its ideal climate, certified Belgian Linen™ and Oeko-Tex compliant, and traceable from field to finished fabric.

The long-staple fibers mean less wrinkling and a cleaner surface for printing, which matters a great deal when the design originates from a hand-carved wood block. That level of detail doesn't survive a lesser ground. The low-VOC, water-based ink process we use captures it in its intended form, and Pantone-matched colors mean Mesa looks the same whether you're ordering today or reordering two years from now. Consistency year over year is something we ensure designers can rely on.

The result is a fabric that carries the full story and intention behind it: the desert landscape that inspired it, the hand that carved it, and the material integrity that makes it worth bringing into your home.

Mesa is available by the yard at $175, with a minimum order of three yards. Eight colorways are available, and each is Pantone-matched and designed to layer within the collection or stand on its own.
