Elevating the Dining Experience with Linen Napkins
Linen napkins are a surprisingly powerful addition to your dining table. The right ones can turn an ordinary weeknight dinner into a special occasion, even if you’re eating leftovers in sweatpants...again.
Your dining table, chairs, artwork, and lights are semi-permanent fixtures you get used to as the backdrop for every dinner, but the pieces you and your guests physically touch, hold, and use during a meal will always be noticed. Linen table napkins feel and look luxurious; seeing one folded neatly at your plate tells you this table was set with style and hospitality in mind.

Our cocktail napkins began as leftover yardage we refused to waste.
Can you tell I’m proudly passionate about napkins? It’s partly because I love the origin story of At300Nelson’s linen cocktail napkins! It began with a problem: we had a sizable amount of our 55/45 linen cotton blend fabric left over after completing an order of pillows and table linens. No responsible recycling options were easily accessible, and with sustainability as a core pillar of our mission, we wanted to find a use for the materials.
It took more work than you might expect to figure out how to turn the excess fabric into the perfect napkins, but it was totally worth it. Cocktail napkins have been one of our staple gift items ever since.
Why Choose Linen Table Napkins?

Black and white linens let the food, flowers, and serving pieces bring the color.
Most napkins are naturally designed to be functional first. Cotton’s popular because it’s soft, durable, and easy to clean, and paper napkins can’t be beat for convenience. Neither material elevates its surroundings, though. When you sit down at a table set with cotton or paper napkins, you might not even notice them.
Linen napkins have texture, form, and a kind of tactility that makes it soothing to drape the fabric across your lap at the beginning of a meal or mindlessly run it between your fingers while you chat over the last sips of coffee. It immediately calls to mind the experience of dining in a high-end restaurant, but in the warm comfort of home.
In my experience, our 55/45 linen-cotton blend sits at the intersection of luxury and function, making it the perfect fabric for napkins. The cotton content makes cleaning easier than you might expect, especially considering how rich the fabric feels. Visit our Belgian linen care guide to learn more about keeping linen napkins clean and crisp. (Spoiler alert: you will not need to make a weekly trip to the dry cleaners for your dinner napkins. I would never do that to you.)
Adding linen napkins to your table setting is also the easiest, lowest-cost way to experiment with using linen fabrics in your dining table decor. If you’re doubtful that the fabric can really stand up to your family’s messy eaters, put it to the test! When your linen napkins look great after a few months of use, you might be ready to make the jump to linen placemats.
Styling Linen Napkins for Fall

Hand-painted stripes on our 55/45 linen-cotton blend bring texture to an everyday table.
Some people gravitate toward table linens in shades of red, orange, or brown during the fall, but I love the look of black and white table linens at this time of year. For accents like flatware and candle holders, I like to play with brass, clear, and black. Then you can let your centerpiece, serving dishes, plates, and food be the color.
It’s easy to mix and match linens in different patterns, and black and white can create really interesting visual textures. I might pair Palizada napkins in Albatross with Palizada placemats in Constellation to play up the contrast between light and dark, for example, or use the same napkins with a Leucadia placemat in Albatross to play off the variation in scale and line weight between the patterns. There’s harmony and energy in the way everything works together.
How to Fold Linen Napkins

Our linen blend's weight and drape hold a crisp fold through the whole meal.
A precisely folded napkin at every plate is the kind of detail that tells diners, “Welcoming you to this meal is important to me.”
Our 55/45 linen blend napkins have the ideal weight and drape for holding tons of different folds. Once you start experimenting with all the different ways to style one piece of fabric, napkin folding might become your new favorite hobby.
Thanks to social media, napkin folding inspo is never more than a few clicks away. To get you started, these are a few of the napkin folds that I love doing.
Accordion bow: Starting at one edge, gather the napkin in 1-inch pleats until the fabric is stacked in an accordion shape. Slide a napkin ring onto the middle, fan out the pleats, and place sideways on the plate.
Flatware pocket: Fold a napkin in half, then quarters. Fold the top corner down to meet the opposite corner, then flip the napkin over and fold over the sides to meet in the middle. Turn the napkin over again and tuck flatware into the pocket you’ve created.
Festive holiday meal: Loosely gather the sides of the napkin to create a rectangular bundle, slide a napkin ring on (or tie with a ribbon) and drape across the plate. Slide a festive accent into the ring: a sprig of greenery, a flower, a candy cane, etc.
As we nestle into the fall and winter, I love preparing for cozy gatherings around the table. Every small detail is important; I want to create a space where people feel invited to sit, linger, and feel the warmth of my hospitality, and setting the table with At300Nelson’s linen table napkins is part of how I do it.
