Structure Meets Softness: The Story Behind Our Fabric Blend

Creating the perfect blend is key to enjoying so many parts of your life. The perfect blend of coffee and milk to start your day. Curating a playlist that’ll keep you motivated during a cleaning spree. Inviting the perfect blend of friends to a dinner party to keep the conversation flowing.

Getting the blend right is basically the entire goal of good home design, right? It’s all about finding the totally unique mix of colors, shapes, textures, and aesthetics that make you, specifically, feel at home. You should be able to plop down on your couch, look around your space, and have everything feel perfectly attuned to your unique sensibilities.

When I was selecting the Belgian linen that forms the basis of all the home textiles we created at At300Nelson, it was important to me that the upholstery that ends up on your couch isn’t too rough or prone to wrinkling. I needed throw pillows that were easy to clean, so you aren’t scared to let a kid or a pet get near them. High-maintenance fabrics like 100% linen can become a real stressor when used on furniture that’s meant to be lived on, not just looked at.

At300Nelson’s 55/45 linen cotton blend fabric hits the sweet spot, giving you that classically crisp, organic linen look in fabric that’s soft and sturdy enough for everyday use. From furniture upholstery to dinner napkins, our 55/45 linen cotton blend looks great in a variety of applications and is made to last. It’s truly durable linen fabric, and because we only source sustainable, long-fiber Belgian Linen™, the superior quality is immediately noticeable when you get to see and feel the fabric up close.

WHY A 55/45 LINEN COTTON BLEND FABRIC?

Round ottomans and pillows upholstered in durable fabric for furniture in cream and gold tones

From ottomans to pillows, our durable fabric for furniture keeps patterns sharp and textures soft.

Don’t get us wrong, 100% linen has its place. When you need a chic pool cover-up that you don’t mind getting wrinkly, you can’t beat it. The problem is that once the stiff flax fibers that comprise linen get bent, they like to stay bent. Stiff, bent fibers create stubborn wrinkles and can make linen fabrics feel scratchy on your skin.

I wanted our fabric to provide a softer, lower-maintenance experience. And if you’re new to At300Nelson’s 55/45 linen cotton blend fabric, here’s everything you need to know about this durable linen fabric:

JUST-RIGHT RATIO

I really did my research when selecting the fabric for our linen cotton blend. Any blend that was too delicate or too stiff wouldn’t work for At300Nelson’s collections. The ratio of 55% long-fiber Belgian linen and 45% cotton fibers proved to be just right. The fabric looks like linen, but performs more like cotton. It’s soft to the touch, easier to sew than linen, and structured just enough to drape beautifully.

LASTING POWER

Soft yet sturdy, our linen cotton blend fabric is made to handle life with kids and pets.

For our 55/45 linen cotton blend, durability shows up as toughness and forgiveness. The fabric can handle real life, whether that’s muddy paws or a finger-painting kiddo. Natural fibers do require a little more care than synthetics, but stains can often come out at home without a dry cleaner.

GETS BETTER WITH AGE

In a world of fast fashion and planned obsolescence, we’ve gotten used to things breaking down and wearing out. But when you’re choosing an expensive and central focus piece like a sofa or drapes, you need fabric that’s going to function well and look just as good in 5 years as it looks today. Unlike synthetic materials, At300Nelson’s 55/45 blend gets better with wear and time rather than degrading. It’s an investment that pays off.

PATTERNS SHINE

Bold, colorfast prints stay crisp on our durable linen fabric, even after years of everyday use.

One of the core reasons we chose the 55/45 linen cotton blend ratio was that prints look fantastic on this fabric. One of my first clients was a neighbor who asked me to create a custom pillow for her in the Marguerite print. In a house full of kids, pets, and tons of guests, that pillow saw a lot of use. Four years later, I was excited to see that it still looked great. The bold, distinctive lines of the print were just as crisp and colorfast as they had been when the pillow was new.

Colors and patterns have more staying power on the 55/45 linen fabric than on pure linen. This blend also allows for truer reproduction of a repeated print than 100% linen would. Think of the difference between stamping an image on a thin piece of linen with its uneven surface, compared to stamping an image on a piece of smooth, supple cotton. The finest details of the pattern come through on the 55/45 blend, thanks to its cotton content.

FLEXIBILITY

When you’re looking for durable linen fabrics, or more generally for durable fabric for furniture, it’s rare to find one that works in multiple applications across multiple rooms of the home. The same soft-yet-structured fabric works beautifully for upholstery, pillows, drapery, and napkins. Easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to love for a long time. At300Nelson’s 55/45 linen cotton blend fabric is perfect for custom pieces, and we love to see it used in varied ways, especially across one project.
