The Intersection of Surfing and Textile Design

surfing inspiration behind textile designs

As any design lover will tell you, the world of design is vast and ever-evolving, with inspiration to be found everywhere. But for those of us who live and breathe the coastal lifestyle, there’s a special connection between the art of surfing and the craft of textile design. This intersection isn’t just about aesthetics to At300Nelson—it’s about capturing the energy, freedom and fluidity of the waves and translating that into fabrics that transform spaces. Today, I wanted to give you the ultimate glimpse into my creative process. Join me as I break down our unique fusion of surfing culture and textile design and explore how the rhythm of the ocean influences our prints, color palettes and textures for a chic modern coastal vibe. Cultural Influence: Surfing’s Imprint on Textile Design

Surfing is more than just a sport; it's a lifestyle, a way of being that resonates with the freedom of the open ocean and the unpredictability of the waves. As a creative soul, this culture has had a profound impact on my textile design. I find the deepest inspiration where the fluidity of water, the dynamic movement of surfers and the organic shapes of coastal landscapes meet.

In case you’re new here, I’m Courtney, the founder and visionary behind At300Nelson. I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, then pursued my love of art and design at The Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, giving me a unique bi-coastal perspective. While riding the waves and soaking in the vibrant surf culture of coastal California, I discovered my deepest well of creativity. Today, this influence is evident in our designs, where our prints echo the dynamic curves of waves or the bold, graphic lines reminiscent of surfboards cutting through water.

“Surfing is all about flow. It's a dance,” says Courtney, “and I wanted to capture that sense of movement and freedom in my textiles. It’s about translating the energy of the ocean into something tangible, something that brings that vibe into your home.”

Design Inspiration: Capturing the Surf Lifestyle in Fabric

One of the most striking aspects of our work is how directly it channels the essence of the surf lifestyle. Take, for instance, the Basilone pattern—a print inspired by a perfect surf session in San Onofre. This design features sweeping, wave-like curves that mimic the ocean’s fluid motion, creating a sense of calm yet vibrant energy. The small-scale print adds dimension and offers a fresh, modern twist on coastal design.

Another example is our Palizada print, which draws from an awe-inspiring experience stargazing in the desert after a long day of surfing. The subtle star patterns and movement within the print are a nod to the vastness of the night sky, offering a soothing contrast to our more dynamic, wave-inspired designs.

“Every pattern is a piece of my journey,” Courtney explains. “I want each fabric to tell a story, to evoke a memory of the shore, the sand, and the sea."

Material Innovation: Reflecting the Surfing Experience Through Textiles

When it comes to materials, we are deeply committed to using fabrics that not only look good, but also feel good and do good. Our designs are crafted from eco-friendly, sustainable materials that reflect our dedication to the environment—a value deeply rooted in the surf community. For example, we use Oeko-Tex compliant dyes which ensure that our vibrant, ocean-inspired colors are safe for both you and the planet.

By design, every yard of fabric is durable yet soft. As a result of time spent in the ocean and between both coasts, I've learned a lot about resilience. I've created textiles that are as versatile and tough as they are luxurious - fabrics that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life while maintaining their connection to the natural world.

Trend Integration: Bringing Surf-Inspired Textiles into Your Home Decor

For those looking to bring a touch of the coast into their homes, our surf-inspired textiles offer a unique way to blend style and substance. These coastal designs work beautifully in both minimalist and eclectic spaces, adding a layer of depth and movement that mirrors the natural rhythms of the ocean.

Consider using wave-patterned fabrics like Basilone for upholstery, where the flowing lines can create a focal point in a living room or lounge area. Then, layer on larger scale printed access pillows like Marguerite and Cristianitos to create a balanced mix of pattern with a sense of serenity. For a more subtle nod to the surf lifestyle, opt for Palizada in window treatments or accent pieces, where the stargazing-inspired design can add a touch of quiet elegance.
