A Textile Designer’s St. Augustine Travel Guide

Historic Charm: Key Landmarks That Define St. Augustine

St. Augustine is America’s oldest city and its historic charm is undeniable. To kick off your adventure, I recommend starting at Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. Walking through its corridors, the history is palpable. Every visit is an experience that sparks my own designs, blending the old with the new.

Another must-visit is the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. Climbing the 219 steps to the top is well worth the panoramic views of the city and coastline. The black-and-white striped lighthouse is a personal favorite. Thanks to its bold contrast and timeless silhouette, this site is visually striking and provides much design inspiration.

Flagler College, originally the Ponce de Leon Hotel, is a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture. The intricate details, from the stained glass windows to ornate ceilings, are a shining example of the artistic heritage that thrives in St. Augustine. And from one creative to another, Flagler College has an amazing art and design program!

Local Art and Design: Reflecting St. Augustine’s Cultural Heritage

St. Augustine’s art scene is as rich as its history. The Lightner Museum is another personal favorite. Housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, this museum showcases an eclectic fine and decorative arts collection. The building itself, with its grand architecture and lush courtyards, is a constant source of inspiration for my textile designs. I find myself overwhelmingly inspired after every visit.

For a more contemporary experience, I suggest participating in the First Friday Art Walk in downtown St. Augustine. This monthly event is a veritable treasure trove of local creativity. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to explore galleries and meet artists pushing design boundaries. From vibrant colors and diverse artistic styles. I often find inspiration for my own sketches.

Don’t miss the St. Augustine Art Association, where you can discover the works of local artists who draw inspiration from the city’s unique environment. It’s a great place to find pieces that capture the essence of St. Augustine, much like how I try to encapsulate the city’s spirit in my textiles.

A Designer’s Perspective: Finding Inspiration in St. Augustine

As a textile designer, I’m always on the lookout for new sources of inspiration. It’s one of the most treasured steps in my creative process! One of my favorite spots is The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. While it can be busy because it’s a popular tourist attraction, I find that a visit is always worth it. As a place where history and nature intersect beautifully, I can’t help but love it. The lush gardens, ancient oak trees and free-ranging peacocks provide a serene setting that always sparks my creativity.

Pro tip: when you visit the Archeological Park, be sure to check out the BBQ concession stand out front called Smoked. Not only are their tasty bites fantastic, but the local peacocks meander around the tables, making it a truly unique dining experience.

If you’re searching for a hidden gem, try Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, just a short drive from St. Augustine. The park’s formal gardens, with their carefully curated plantings and historic coquina rock formations, are a living canvas of textures and patterns. It’s a perfect place to clear your mind and let inspiration flow.

Hidden Gems: Uncovering the Lesser-Known Treasures

While the well-known attractions are certainly worth visiting, St. Augustine is also full of hidden gems. One such spot that I highly recommend is Anastasia State Park. Tucked away from the busier parts of St. Augustine, this beachside park offers a tranquil escape with its pristine sands and untouched natural beauty. I often find inspiration in the colors and textures of the dunes and ocean waves for my fabric designs.

Ready to ride some waves? Anastasia State Park is also home to one of my favorite surf spots. Don’t forget to visit The Surf Station on your way in. It’s a place that’s near and dear to my heart—I got my first wetsuit and surfboard here in high school!

Head to The Blue Hen Café in the Lincolnville Historic District for a taste of local cuisine. This cozy eatery serves up Southern comfort food with a modern twist that’s oh-so-good. It’s a favorite among locals and a great place to experience the warm, welcoming spirit of St. Augustine.

Finally, explore the St. Augustine Distillery. Housed in a restored ice plant, this craft distillery offers free tours and tastings. The industrial-chic design, with its blend of old and new, mirrors the approach I take in my own work—honoring tradition while embracing innovation.

Shopping:

If you’re in the mood to shop, I recommend stopping by Hilaman and Co for all things mid-century modern. Taylor's shop is my go-to from furniture to Italian ceramics and rare art finds.

The St. Augustine Amphitheatre isn’t only for entertainment (although we’ve seen some of our favorite bands perform there!)—it’s also home to a farmers market every Saturday and a night market on occasional Tuesdays. This spot is also part of the Green Hands Initiative and has a deep commitment to sustainability.

Getting Around:

St. Augustine is a walkable city, but to cover more ground, consider renting a bike or taking one of the charming trolleys that loop around the city.

Where to Stay:

For a truly immersive and authentic experience, stay at one of the historic bed-and-breakfasts in the heart of downtown. Many of these inns are beautifully restored, offering a glimpse into the city’s past with all the comforts of modern amenities.

The Local is a fab spot to stay. Located on Anastasia Island, you’ll be a quick bike ride or walk to Historic Downtown St. Augustine. It’s owned and operated by a local family and was recently voted the #1 motel in the US by USA Today’s 10 Best.

If you’re up for an adventure, definitely consider camping at Anastasia State Park. With 139 sites for both RVs and tents, it’s an amazing spot to observe local water birds such as the great blue heron, tricolored heron and roseate spoonbills.

Dining:

In addition to The Blue Hen Café, be sure to try The Floridian, which is known for its farm-to-table Southern cuisine with a creative twist. For a sweet treat, definitely stop by Cousteau’s Waffle and Milkshake Bar for a deliciously indulgent treat.

Sunday Gathering Table is another favorite spot for both breakfast or lunch. I personally feel like they have the best sourdough in town! And while you’re there, pop over to Jenna Alexander Studio for original artwork and postcards. If you time your visit right, you can catch the Uptown Block Party, too!

If you’re in the mood to be blown away, make a reservation at Lotus Noodle Bar. The modern Japanese-meets-French cuisine is an absolute must. We recently went for an impromptu date and have yet to stop talking about it!

For an all-in-one experience, I highly recommend scoping out Spinster Abbott’s. Located in uptown St. Augustine, it’s a bodega, taproom and lodging all rolled into one. I love the bodega for its curated selection of local makers, farmers, and vintage goods. Similarly, the taproom features local crews, good vibes and eclectic decor—plus the delicious Hotbox food truck outside! Be sure to try the poke nachos.
